Auxiliary Names Auxiliary names are a backup list PAGASA uses when more tropical cyclones form in a single year than the regular annual list of names can cover. International Naming System The international naming system, maintained by the WMO through JMA, assigns names to tropical cyclones in the Northwest Pacific from a rotating list contributed by member countries across the region. Retired Typhoon Names Retired typhoon names are names permanently removed from PAGASA's or the international naming list following a storm so catastrophic or deadly that reusing the name is considered inappropriate. Tropical Cyclone Name List A tropical cyclone name list is the pre-assigned, rotating set of names PAGASA or JMA cycles through each year to identify new storms as they form.
