English was introduced during the American colonial period beginning in 1901, when teachers known as Thomasites established it as the medium of public instruction, and it was formalized as an official language under the 1935 constitution. It remains dominant in higher education, legal documentation, and scientific and technical discourse, while Filipino is more commonly used in broadcast media and informal daily speech, with a large share of the population fluent in both.
